"Each year when it came time to do the annual school play, I was continually disappointed with the availability of good, Christian plays. So, I decided to write one myself and see what happened. I knew what I wanted: a play with humor, suspense, a good plot, and something economical to produce; but most of all, I wanted to get a message across to our audience. Well, it worked. The kids liked doing them, the board was pleased with the positive PR, and the audience got the message. Problem was, now I was locked into writing one the next year, and the next, and ....Well, anyway here are the plays I wrote. Now, you don’t have to write one yourself."

Jerry Hawn taught for nine years at Victory Christian Academy.

Each year his students got older and the plays became more sophisticated. His final play was co-authored with his son Josh who was a senior at the time.

1. Of Great Price c1990 7M, 9F, extras. 3 Acts, approx. 45 min. This play deals with a family finding their true priorities and the humorous resolve to a diamond heist. The setting is a living room and a shopping mall.

2. Hope, Dead Leaves, and a Necklace c1992 4M, 8F. 6 Scenes, approx. 1 hour. This play deals with the struggle of an unwanted pregnancy while keeping the audience laughing. The setting is a modern apartment.

3. Absolutely Certain c1993 5M, 7F. 4 Acts, approx. 1 hour. This play is a drama which deals with the problems of keeping a family together in the midst of a crisis caused by a rogue virus. The setting is a doctor's office.

4.A Fuller Life c1994 6M, 7F. 3 Acts, approx. 45 min. This play shows how a family deals with death and real life decisions. This play has many humorous moments. The setting is a family's living room.

5. The Way Home c1995 10M, 11F. 3 Acts, approx. 1 hour. This play stresses salvation while entertaining the audience with wit and action. The setting is a contemporary office and a cafe. There is a western flashback complete with a brawl.

These plays were written by Jerry and Josh Hawn for the small Christian school with which they were involved. The plays have many humorous moments with the undercurrent of a serious point. Because of the small stage and limited resources that they had to use, there are very few and uncomplicated set changes. The few props that these plays incorporate are inexpensive and easy to find. Also, many of the parts could be played by either male or female actors. The actors/actresses were junior and senior high students, with an occasional cameo role by the author.
